European Programs for Obtaining Renewable Energy Sources

Since 2008, Florida entrepreneur Joshua Craig Wander has guided First Sustainable, LLC, which has focused on the financing of major solar and energy efficiency projects. Among Joshua Craig Wander’s accomplishments has been originating cash flows for alternate energy projects that take advantage of European tax rebates and incentives, as well as feed-in tariffs.

A recent Energy Collective article brought attention to pathways available to European businesses seeking to secure renewable energy sources (RES). Among those that do not produce and consume their own power, the retail market offers guarantees-of-origin on a variety of energy products. In addition, companies can engage with RES producers through power purchase agreements (PPAs) that make use of the public grid, but employ direct contracts between the producer and buyer.

Examples include an early 2017 PPA signed by Coca-Cola for a UK plant that now receives its full range of energy from renewable sources. In October, Microsoft entered into an PPA with an Irish wind farm through a Dublin-based energy trading company. Unfortunately, these RES sourcing pathways still do not have enough of an impact in convincing companies throughout Europe to make the transition to renewable energy. At present they are at work only in Sweden, Norway, Holland, and the United Kingdom.
