A recent update from Mount Sinai Medical Center highlights two new drugs that are being used to treat high cholesterol. LDL cholesterol (also called “bad” cholesterol) can lead to fat deposits in arteries, which increase the risk of a stroke or heart attack.

Drugs such as Crestor and Lipitor are typically prescribed to treat high LDL, but some patients may not be able to tolerate them. Two new FDA-approved drugs, Praluent and Repatha, have been developed to fight high LDL.

The drugs are taken as a self-administered injection either bi-weekly or monthly, depending on the drug and dosage. Praluent and Repatha have been shown to be very effective in lowering cholesterol levels.

European Programs for Obtaining Renewable Energy Sources

In addition, companies can engage with RES producers through power purchase agreements (PPAs) that make use of the public grid, but employ direct contracts between the producer and buyer. 

Examples include an early 2017 PPA signed by Coca-Cola for a UK plant that now receives its full range of energy from renewable sources. In October, Microsoft entered into an PPA with an Irish wind farm through a Dublin-based energy trading company. Unfortunately, these RES sourcing pathways still do not have enough of an impact in convincing companies throughout Europe to make the transition to renewable energy. At present they are at work only in Sweden, Norway, Holland, and the United Kingdom.

The Mourning Family Foundation’s Educational Scholarship Fund

Established in 1997 by Tracy and Alonzo Mourning, the Mourning Family Foundation has raised over $25 million for educational and extracurricular activities for young people in south Florida’s underprivileged communities. To this end, the Foundation created several programs, including the Capital Campaign, the Antipoverty Initiative, and the Educational Scholarship Fund.

In the summer of 2016, the Foundation set up the Educational Scholarship Fund with the premise that students from a community of color should not be denied the chance to further their education at an institution of higher learning simply because they lack the financial resources. Working with local schools, the Fund identifies and selects qualified high school seniors in south Florida and awards them a four-year scholarship to cover the educational expenses at the college of their choice.

Greater Miami Jewish Federation Hosts Miami Jewish Film Festival

An alumnus of the University of Florida, Joshua Wander founded SuttonPark Capital and 777 Partners, both found in Miami. Outside of the office, Joshua Wander supports several charities, including the Greater Miami Jewish Foundation.

Established more than 75 years ago, the Greater Miami Jewish Foundation unites the Jewish community in Miami-Dade County. It raises money each year to fund local agencies, including Jewish day schools, synagogues, and community centers. It also strives to establish a strong foundation on college campuses and in communities across the country.

To reach out to people in the community, the Greater Miami Jewish Foundation sponsors a variety of events during the year. One of these is the 21st annual Miami Jewish Film Festival, which occurs on January 11-25, 2018, at the Aventura Arts and Cultural Center in Aventura, Florida. First begun in 1996, the festival typically draws 23, 000 people, making it one of the world’s largest Jewish film festivals. It is also the largest Jewish cultural event in the southeastern part of the United States.

He is also the founder of SuttonPark Capital in Miami, Florida, and the president of First Sustainable, LLC, in Westport, Connecticut. Outside of work, Joshua Wander supports several charitable organizations, including the Greater Miami Jewish Federation.

Established more than 75 years ago, the Greater Miami Jewish Federation unites members through philanthropy and community building. The organization works with individuals in Miami-Dade County to strengthen the Jewish identity. 

In addition, the Jewish Federation raises money to fund local agencies, including Jewish community centers, day schools, and religious schools. The organization also supports programs in more than 70 other countries.

To help those affected by Hurricane Irma, the Greater Miami Jewish Federation reached out to its members to offer care to both the Jewish and general communities. The organization encouraged volunteers to call or email the Jewish Volunteers Center. The Jewish Federation also formed an emergency relief fund to help with the urgent needs of residents.
